How can projects provide opportunities for deeper thinking in my classroom?

Projects allow students to direct their own learning. The project method of instruction forces the student to become an active participant in the learning process. A well-executed project should open up a world outside of the classroom. The student should have the opportunity to explore situations that are not presented through traditional methods such as textbooks, workbooks, or lectures. Projects allow the student to role-play a "real world" situation. Projects shift the responsibility of learning from the teacher to the student. Incorporating technology and presentations into the assessment process will make the student more accountable for the quality of work. Projects provide the opportunity for the students to make their own decisions and solve problems using their own personal skills and abilities. Projects should provide an opportunity for every student to succeed.

  1. I agree that projects "tap" into student interests, allow for student autonomy, and really should help all students be successful, as they have freedom of choice.

  2. I liked the statement that projects allow the opportunity for the students to make their own decisions and solve problems using their own personal skills and abilities. This can really motivate them to get "into" the project and allows them to succeed in ways they might not otherwise be able to do.
